Cricket Betting Odds Explained: Decimal Odds and Probability
Odds describe implied probability and possible payout, not a guaranteed outcome.
What decimal odds represent
Decimal odds express the total potential return per unit stake, including the original stake, if a hypothetical selection wins. For example, odds of 2.50 imply a gross return of 250 units on a 100-unit stake, before applicable deductions.
Calculating implied probability
A simplified calculation is 100 divided by decimal odds. Odds of 2.50 correspond to an implied probability of 40%. This is not necessarily the true probability of an outcome.
Why market margins matter
When implied probabilities for all outcomes are added together, their total often exceeds 100%. The excess can reflect a bookmaker margin. Different markets and providers may display different margins.
Uncertainty and risk
Sports outcomes are uncertain. Team form, weather, injuries and changing conditions can affect matches, but no statistical model removes the possibility of loss.
